How IB scoring works
The diploma total is built from two parts: six subjects graded 1–7 for a maximum of 42, plus up to 3 bonus points from the combination of your Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay grades. That gives the familiar 45.
The part students underestimate is that the total alone doesn’t decide the outcome. A candidate can finish on 30 points and still not receive the diploma, because a grade 1 in any subject, or an E in TOK or the EE, is a failing condition on its own. That’s what the check above is for.

Why 24 points isn’t enough on its own
Most calculators stop at a total. But the diploma is awarded against a list of conditions, and each one can fail you on its own:
- A grade 1 in any subject
- More than two grade 2s
- More than three grades of 3 or below
- Fewer than 12 points across your Higher Level subjects
- Fewer than 9 points across your Standard Level subjects
- A grade E in TOK or the Extended Essay
- Incomplete CAS
This is why a candidate can finish on 30 points and not receive the diploma, while another passes on 24. The calculator above applies all of them, so you find out now rather than in July.
Questions
- How is the IB score out of 45 calculated?
- Six subjects graded 1–7 give a maximum of 42 points. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay combine in a matrix worth up to 3 more, giving 45 in total.
- Can you pass the IB with 24 points but still not get the diploma?
- Yes. Twenty-four points is necessary but not sufficient. A grade 1 in any subject, more than two grade 2s, more than three grades of 3 or below, fewer than 12 HL points, fewer than 9 SL points, an E in TOK or the Extended Essay, or incomplete CAS will each prevent the diploma being awarded.
- How many bonus points do TOK and the Extended Essay give?
- Between 0 and 3, depending on the combination of the two grades. An A in both gives 3. An E in either is a failing condition.
- What happens if I take four Higher Level subjects?
- Your best three HL grades count toward the 12-point HL minimum. If you take only two SL subjects, the SL minimum reduces to 5 points.
- Does a grade 1 fail the whole IB diploma?
- Yes. A single grade 1 in any subject prevents the diploma being awarded, regardless of your total. A student on 35 points with one grade 1 does not receive the diploma.
- What happens if you get an E in TOK or the Extended Essay?
- An E in either component is a failing condition and no bonus points are awarded. The diploma cannot be awarded, however many subject points you have.
